During a behavioral science class, a professor wheeled out a large transparent cage, placing a curious male rat inside. The little guy stood motionless in the center, alert and waiting.

To kick off his demonstration, the professor placed a slice of cake at one end of the cage and a female rat at the other.

Without hesitation, the male rat dashed straight toward the cake and devoured it.

Next, the professor swapped the cake for a piece of bread. Again, the male rat ignored the female and scurried straight to the new snack.

This routine continued—cheese, crackers, fruit—you name it. No matter what the food was, the rat always chose it over the lady rat waiting patiently on the other side.

After several rounds, the professor turned to the class and proudly declared, “As you can see, this proves that food is a more powerful motivator than attraction or companionship.”
