Walter and Mabel had been side by side for more than six decades. Through all of life’s twists and turns, they stood together—sharing laughs, wiping tears, and never keeping secrets. Well, almost never.
Tucked away in the back of Mabel’s closet was an old shoebox. Early in their marriage, she had asked Walter never to open it, and never to ask what was inside. And so, for over 60 years, he didn’t.

But one quiet afternoon, as Mabel lay frail and tired in a hospital bed, Walter knew time was running short. Gently holding her hand, he whispered, “Mabel, we’ve shared a lifetime together. Do you think I could finally look inside that shoebox?”
Mabel gave a faint smile and nodded. “Yes, dear. I think it’s time.”
Walter brought the box over and lifted the lid. Inside were two small handmade dolls and several bundles of cash—totaling nearly $95,000. He blinked, puzzled.
“Honey,” he asked softly, “what’s all this about?”

With a warm chuckle, Mabel replied, “Just before we got married, my nana gave me some advice. She told me that whenever I got angry at you, I should bite my tongue and crochet a little doll instead of picking a fight.”
Walter’s eyes misted. Only two dolls in all these years? That meant she had only been upset with him twice in over six decades!
His heart swelled. “You’ve only been mad at me two times?” he asked, voice trembling.
Mabel squeezed his hand gently. “That’s right.”
Walter shook his head in awe, but then glanced back at the pile of money. “And… what about all this cash?”
She smiled slyly. “That came from selling the rest of the dolls.”
