Thrifted Washboard Farmhouse Makeover

Finding hidden gems at a thrift store can feel like discovering buried treasure. Recently, I stumbled upon a rustic, vintage glass and wood washboard at a local thrift shop. Though it looked worn and well-used, I immediately saw its potential for becoming a charming piece of farmhouse-style decor. With a little creativity and some easy-to-find materials, I was able to bring this washboard back to life and give it a whole new purpose.

Cleaning the Washboard: Prepping for Restoration

When I first brought the washboard home, it was clear that it had seen better days. The wood was dried out, and clothing lint had collected along the edges. Before doing anything else, I needed to give it a good cleaning to prepare it for the restoration process.

  • Step 1: Hot Soapy Wash
I started by scrubbing the washboard in my kitchen sink using hot, soapy water. I chose Dawn dish soap for its grease-cutting power, which worked wonders on the stubborn grime that had built up over time.
  • Step 2: Removing Lint with a Shish Kabob Stick
The dried clothing lint, especially around the sideboards, needed some extra attention. Using a shish kabob stick, I carefully pulled the lint out of the crevices. This simple tool worked surprisingly well, allowing me to remove most of the lint and get into those hard-to-reach spots.

With the washboard clean and lint-free, it was ready for the next steps: refinishing the wood and adding decor elements.

Enhancing the Wood: Giving It a Weathered Look

Once the washboard had dried completely, I knew I wanted to give the wood an updated, weathered look that would fit perfectly with the farmhouse aesthetic. To achieve this, I turned to one of my favorite products for wood refinishing.

  • Step 3: Applying Rust-Oleum Varathane Weathered Wood Accelerator
I brushed on a coat of Rust-Oleum Varathane Weathered Wood Accelerator in Gray. This product helps to even out the wood tone and gives it a lovely grayish tint, perfect for achieving that worn, rustic appearance. I’ve used this product on many projects, and it never disappoints. It gave the washboard a beautiful, weathered finish that complemented its vintage feel.

Adding Farmhouse Flair with a Decor Transfer

To add a personal touch to the washboard, I decided to apply a decor transfer. I had some pieces left from the Redesign With Prima collection called Everyday Farmhouse, which I had used in previous projects. Even though this particular transfer is retired, you can still find it on Etsy or other online retailers.

  • Step 4: Applying the Rosewood Farm Decor Transfer
The Rosewood Farm portion of the transfer was a perfect fit for the washboard. After peeling off the paper backing, I centered the transfer onto the wood. Using the rectangular stick provided in the transfer tube, I carefully rubbed the transfer onto the board. It’s crucial to be gentle during this step—always peel back the clear top sheet slowly to make sure the entire transfer has adhered to the surface. If it hasn’t, you can rub it more to ensure a perfect application.

Reviving the Wood with Dixie Belle’s Big Mama’s Butta

Next, I focused on reviving the dry wood, which had clearly been neglected over time. To bring it back to life and protect it from future wear, I used Dixie Belle’s Big Mama’s Butta, a popular product for enhancing wood grain and conditioning wood surfaces.

  • Step 5: Applying Big Mama’s Butta
I used a rag to apply Big Mama’s Butta in the Flannel scent. This product is a blend of hemp seed oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and carnauba wax, and it’s fantastic for reviving dried-out wood. As soon as I started applying it, the wood soaked it up, and the scent left the washboard smelling fresh. Not only does Big Mama’s Butta bring the wood back to life, but it also leaves a buttery, water-resistant finish that protects the wood for years to come.

Adding a Metal Container for Functionality

I wanted this washboard to be more than just decor—it needed to serve a functional purpose, too. I found a divided metal container from Hobby Lobby in my crafting stash that would be perfect for this project. The container was originally priced at $10.99, but I had purchased it at 50% off during a sale, knowing I’d eventually find a use for it.

  • Step 6: Attaching the Metal Container
The next step was to attach the metal container to the bottom of the washboard. Since I was concerned about cracking the glass with screws or a drill, I asked my husband to help. He carefully attached the container with two short screws, ensuring the glass remained intact. This addition provided the washboard with a practical element, perfect for holding small items.

Decorating the Metal Container

Once the container was securely attached, it was time to decorate it with some farmhouse-style items to complete the look.

  • Step 7: Adding Vintage Elements
I filled the divided container with a potted plant from Target’s Bullseye Playground, jute twine, and vintage clothespins. These items added a rustic charm to the piece, giving it a farmhouse vibe while making it functional for everyday use. The washboard can now either be hung on a laundry room wall or stand proudly on a shelf, blending functionality with beauty.

Final Touches and the Finished Product

I couldn’t be more pleased with how this project turned out. The combination of weathered wood, rustic decor transfers, and practical elements made the washboard a standout piece. It now serves as both a nostalgic reminder of its past and a unique decorative item for a modern farmhouse.

Whether you’re looking to add a vintage touch to your home or want to upcycle old items from a thrift store, transforming a piece like this can be a fun and rewarding project. Plus, it’s a great way to repurpose items that may otherwise go unused.

Conclusion: Turning Thrift Store Finds Into Treasured Decor

With a little creativity and effort, even the most worn-out thrift store finds can become treasured pieces of decor. This vintage glass and wood washboard, which was once used daily in a practical way, now holds a new purpose as a charming farmhouse accent. From cleaning and refinishing to adding decor transfers and practical elements, this project demonstrates how you can turn something old into something beautiful.

Next time you’re browsing a thrift shop, keep an eye out for items that might just need a little TLC to become unique and stylish additions to your home. Whether you’re restoring a washboard, a wooden crate, or an old chair, the possibilities are endless when it comes to DIY farmhouse decor.
